LADY SIN JENA, Protector Paladin of Yatindar

Current Status: Summer, 1331 Avard. Lady Sin Jena took up residence in the town of Kestaria with her son Ichiro after events in Campaign V, Chapter Four. After the War of the Four Winds and the defection of the Janissaries of Kur Maeth to Rakore, Jena found she could no longer sit idly by as a mother. She found appropriate foster care in Kestaria, and had to set back to sea with Commodore Seamus, visiting her son as often as possible. She sometimes misses her husband, Gunju, but just as often curses him for letting his duties take him far away for a long, long time.

Date of Birth: Gril the 27th, 1308 Avard.
Possessions: Jena carries a number of magical and mundane items, all of phenomenal quality and durability. In a large leather pack on her back, she keeps travil rations, waterskins, a hooded lantern, oil, four vials of antitoxin, a masterworked flute of Amaran ivory, and more. She also carries a kobold half-spear, a scroll-copy of the Prophecy of Artan Coalson, an eating dagger, and a light crossbow. Around her neck is the holy symbol of Yatindar, master-wrought in platinum -- alongside one of the diamond map-pendants of Al Mudim. Jena's prized possession is her brother's longsword, known as Anvicard (leveled item, see below). Jena carries one other longsword, as well -- a wedding gift known as Brivanus, with an odd blue tint to it, and armed angels fighting along it's blade. She also wears or possesses: celestial armor, full plate +3, a small steel shield +1, Ye'amen's Ring, flasks of holy water, a potion of bull's strength, a flask of cure light wounds, a potion of delay poison, a rod of enemy detection, a circlet of language comprehension, and a cloak of charisma +2. In her scroll-case, she carries scrolls of hold person, chill metal, command, invisibility to undead, and faerie fire. Sometimes on her, and sometimes not, is a watered-steel longsword with the official Royal Seal of Rakore stamped on its base -- an indication of her knighthood in Rakore.

Her wedding ring is crafted in platinum, with a single, tiny blue diamond inset in it with a beveled cut -- and long strands of black and platinum blonde hair inlaid along the inside. The ring make her invisible to and undetectable by the undead. The undead are allowed a saving throw (Willpower, DC 21) to detect Jena. Furthermore, undead of up to 3HD approaching within 10ft of the ring must make a saving throw (Fortitude, DC 20) or be subject to disintegration. Prerequisites: Arcane Caster Level 13, Forge Ring, nondetection, limited wish, disintegrate, Market Value of 38,250gp.

Appearance: Jena's platinum blonde hair and strikingly blue eyes are in keeping with the Yatindaran colors -- and may be why she chose the path of the righteous paladin. Gifted with a full figure and a woman's grace, Jena can draw attention quickly, though only 20 years of age. Her dazzling smile, and the use of blues and whites to accentuate her natural coloring, ensures that people remember her wherever she goes. When not in armor, she tends to wear a loose set of trousers and tunic in her riding boots, though few people notice her well-muscled calves or very strong fore-arms.

Background: The del Camper family were merchants, armorers, and weaponsmiths that did well in the days before the War of the Undead. Their home in the city of Giranhad included a dwarven armorer and an elven weaponsmith, and the large family was a warm and happy place full of sunshine and life. When the War of the Undead broke out, Giranhad was evacuated by the Fourth Crusaders, who fled westward across the sea towards Kur Maeth. Some of Jena's family were left behind, and the times were trying, just surviving to Kur Maeth. Just short of the foul city, Jena and the remainder of her family were captured by slavers and the pirate princes, and sold upriver into the Laekenala Jungles.

During the escape, her brother was killed, and Jena was just able to save his longsword from destruction. Not long after that, she made her way to Kur Maeth, where the Church of Yatindar happily took her in. Jenavee was taught in the ways of Archprelate Talon Bhramord and the Chosen of Arpelos -- that the Inquisition need no longer persecute the mages. After years of careful training and quiet study, Jena received her first brace as a Banner Paladin of Yatindar. Determined to see for herself the truth about mages, and disturbed by dark, demonic dreams of something awakening, she headed west to Rakore.

In Rakore, she met Huzar Ye'amen al Sharral -- who would rid the world of the long lost artifact Al Mudim. Giving her word as a paladin to help him find and destroy the artifact, Jena has set out with three other prophecy-appointeded individuals towards the great unknown, with Ye'amen as her guide.

From the player's own notes:
Jena is a visually striking young woman. Her platinum blonde hair is more silver than blonde and seems to almost stir as if caught in a breeze. Her blues change color with her moods; blue as a summer sky when she laughs, cold and hard as winter ice when angered, and gray when filled with sorrow. Her eyes tend to blaze with an inner fire when defending her companions or calling on her powers inherent with her blood or vocation. Few things detract from her almost perfect features.

She moves with a cat like grace of a trained fighter, but she also has a dancers grace to her movements from the angelic blood of her ancestors. The celestial part of her is most significant in the hauntingly beautiful tunes she plays on her flute and her intense stare when convinced whole-heartily in what she believes.

With the death of Ye’amen, Jena has become the unofficial leader of the quest; a role she hardly feels capable of. She believes in the quest with all her heart and is glad to have the help (if Cleo and Gunju will continue after their geas has been lifted), but finds herself terrified of being responsible for their lives. She has seen too many dear to her heart hurt and even killed in the most cruel and inhuman ways, to watch her companions suffer and die beside her. The death of Ye’amen still weighs heavy upon her heart. Within the short time with the wise old man, Jena had come to respect and admire the man deeply. Jena desperately wishes he was with them still; not just for the knowledge he held of the quest, but for the wisdom he carried.

And Jena feels she is sorely in need of a lot of wisdom now. She now holds deep feelings for the other two humans in the party. Cleo is the uncut diamond in the rough; a beautiful jewel that hides its worth under a rough and cheap-looking exterior. Sometimes the two of them seem to be of like minds on things; but at others they butt heads and send off sparks. Jena considers her a dear friend and capable young woman, but she does not fully trust Cleo yet. Cleo is not the person Jena wishes to discuss her personal issues to: namely Gunju.

Jena believes Gunju will continue with the quest, and hopes with all her heart that he will. His unique and very capable fighting style, and his noble heart, make him a great asset as a warrior. In the days that Jena has spent with Gunju; sparring, talking, and listening, she has begun to admire him greatly...and more. Jena has begun to fall in love with the Eastern warrior; and is scared to. Their cultures and beliefs seem to be so different, but the truth behind them is the same; to do good for others at all costs. She does not even know how she is to begin to understand her feelings toward this man. As a warrior covered in dust from the road and blood from her enemies, she does not feel like a woman at all. She feels she has had to sacrifice some of her femininity to gain some of her warrior skills. A trade she thought was fair (why worry if her shoes matched her purse, people trying to kill you surely don’t care), but now leave her feeling less like a woman when she wants to attract the eye of a man. It is like entering a tourney in her night shift; utterly embarrassing and doomed to tragedy. She knows she has insulted Gunju in some way by removing his blades and denying him his means to take is own life, but her heart would have broken had he succeeded.

Jena hides all this torment from the rest of the party. She cries alone in the dark of the night and prays for guidance. She grows weary under the weight of the mission and the burdens of her heart. She laughs less and sadness now colors her eyes the color of autumn rain. When she set out from Kur Maeth, so full of hope and adventure, she never dreamed she would have to shoulder so much she feels ill prepared to carry. But as the sun rises and her companions stir; she takes a deep breath, raises her chin, straighten her shoulders and continues on. The fate of the world will not wait upon a few tears from one young woman, be she a queen, peasant, or banner paladin of Yatindar.

For a wedding present, her friend Aust presented her with a scroll of regeneration, which he used to restore her beauty, and undo the horrible burn scars to one side of her neck and back and side. The restoration restored 1pnt of Charism to her. Not long after this, she was knighted in name only by Duke Henrik Kamus, for her service in hunting down a pirate cove.

Roleplaying Notes: So full of energy that she would rather stand than sit, Jena is a continuously-moving young woman whose dedication to her cause is unswerving. Cautious and self-sacrificing at the same time, Jena's faith comes more from wrote than the tested metal of the trial -- but she knows her time of crisis is coming, and she looks forward to it with all the fiery energy of youth. A determined warrior as well as a paladin, Jena is always on the lookout for new nuances to her dueling style, and is willing to learn any little trick she can to survive and fulfill her demands. Jena feels torn, however, between her new family, and the quest for Al Mudim.

Jena's Journal

Anvicard: Named after one of Yatindar's harbinger archons during the Storm Wars, the sword was first forged in 866 Avard, in preparation for the First Crusades. It's first wielder was a crusader by the name of Tomalirin Voth, a man of considerable stature that preferred fencing with the longsword to bashing in skulls with it. Tomalirin led the assault on an ogremai haven deep in the Choranil Desert, and received the brunt of the ogremai defenses. Included in those defenses was a curse, imposed by Mazripos, Goddess of Disease -- all males bearing the cursed longsword would die should they ever lift the sword against an ogran.

The curse continued on through the centuries, strangely undiscovered, passing from daughter to son to daughter to brother, through the generations. Eventually, Jena's brother came to possess Anvicard. During their escape from slavers in the Laekenala Jungle, however, half-orcs were unleashed to find the runaways -- and Jena's brother tried to wield the sword against them. Jena took up the sword, and is now Anvicard's master.

Anvicard is a leveled-longsword (as per Dragon Magazine #289). For any wielder, it is a cursed longsword with no enhancement bonuses to hit and damage. The sword's curse prohibits any male of any race from wielding it against an ogran (orc, ogre, ogre magi, or kobold); else, the bearer faces a Willpower save vs DC 23, or take a permanent loss of 3d6 Strength points. Should the wielder's Strength points fall to 0, he dies. Powerful though the curse may be, the well-balanced, practical-looking sword has blessings stored within it from all the females that have wielded it through the centuries. Current experience placed in Anvicard: 1,600.
