Grimwoth's Chain Hauberk

Grimwoth is the Karatikan word for 'retribution'. These suits of chain-mail were made of steel, and washed in pure gold; they had a connected coif that covered the head, and usually came down to about mid-thigh. Each suit conferred a base Armor Class of 4, and saved on the item chart against disjunction and tortuous blows as though it were 'hard metal +2', acting, in effect, as chain-mail +2.

Every time a significant force struck the hauberk, whether from weapons or from a fall to the ground, the hauberk released a burst of magical energy that traveled to the nearest living creature within four feet (4') that was not the wearer. More often than not, the nearest living creature to the hauberk, other than the wearer, is the attacker. The hauberk will still release its magical attack, when under fire from missle attacks, so the wearer must be sure to be away from allies and mounts, in such circumstances.

The magical attack deals 1d8 points of damage, each time it is struck (but never more often then once per round). The attack does not affect the undead, or magically animated creatures such as golems, and their ilk. Those attacked by the hauberk may make a saving throw versus spells; this save is made the first time the hauberk attacks them, and never after. A successful save indicates that the attacked is immune to the magical attacks, and will never suffer damage from them. A failed save indicates that the individual attacking the hauberk will take full damage, the first time he strikes the hauberk, and ever after. Immunity continues, even if the suit if mail changes owners.

The wearer of the chain-mail hauberk must utter the command word 'Grimwoth' each time they don the suit, or he wills uffer 1d8 points of damage, as well as the nearest living thing within 4'. The wearer, if he does not utter 'Grimwoth', is subject to the attack, even if he is immune, because he is in such proximity to the hauberk.
