Sayings of a Mad Man
The following are a collection of mantras that have been said often, and have served me well. They have, in a strange sort of way, defined who I am more so than most anything else.
My Father's Gifts to Me
Leave it better than how you found it.
Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
You don't owe me a damn thing, because I've given you a loan.
Pay it back by doing a better job with your children than I have with mine.
I'm proud of you, son, because I know how far you've come.
Read for pleasure. If you don't, then you won't Learn for pleasure.
Don't cook the same thing, the same way, every time.
Well, son, I don't know what else to tell you...
My Mother's Gifts to Me
When life gives you lemons -- make lemonade.
No matter what happens, This, too, shall pass.
If it's on sale, then it's worth looking at.
No matter how tall you get, I can always reach up and swat your behind.
No one can beat you up as well as you can.
My Gifts to You
You maintain things at a high enough level for long enough, And they practically maintain themselves.
If it's broke, then fix it, or quit bitchin about it.
Not everything is for everyone, So don't assume everyone can do everything -- even you.
Blind faith in anything -- even gods -- is for fools.
Listen to the people around you, and then listen to yourself.
If common sense were that common, then everyone would have it.
You don't have to know everything; you just have to know who does.
Learn fear; it's easy to love wolves, until you've been stalked by them.
Nothing is impossible. Some things are just highly improbable.
Judge a man by how he handles the mistakes he makes -- not whether or not he makes mistakes.
There's three sides to every coin; hunt till you find em.
If it makes sense, then you've had too much to drink; go home.
Someone's Gifts (though I can't say whose)
Just because you can do a thing, doesn't mean you must.
What do you call a man that speaks only one language? An American.
Joe's Rules of Leadership
1. Never give an order you know will not be obeyed, or that you cannot enforce.
2. Where there is one -- there may be many.
3. The Third Stripe is for teaching; the only difference between a raw recruit and a veteran of twenty years should be experience.
4. Loyalty and criticism goes both ways -- period.
5. The first step towards tyranny is to silence the opposition.
6a. Maintenance is a bitch; you have to be a son-of-a-bitch about maintenance.
6b. Soldiers need maintenance, too: bodies, hearts, souls, and minds.
Destiny, is Predetermined by History
"I have fought against dragons.
I have fought against demons.
And I have fought against the very gods themselves.
But the toughest battle ground of all
Was that of the heart.
You cannot fight yourself.
You cannot fight who you are.
You cannot fight your future self."
