Joe "Khavik" Parish

The face of a DM that brings beer to the campaign table.Joe Parish, Rennaissance Man: student, soldier, biologist, survivalist, teacher, cross-trainer, author, poet, camper, RTS gamer, explorer, amateur photographer, philosopher, and confessor. I'm the kind of man that likes to learn, though I prefer science, history, and survivalism. My hobbies include Dungeons and Dragons, writing and reading Science Fiction and Fantasy works, firearms, and the military. Sensitive to cigarette smoke, although I've been known to light up a good cigar now and again. Drink occasionally, and prefer fruit ciders or the occasional merlot.

'Kavik' is Inuit for 'wolverine', according to Walt Morey's book Kavik: The Wolf Dog. 'Khavikanum' (or more traditionally, 'cave canem') is Latin for 'beware of dog'.

Fantasy
A new kingdom in the south of the Forgotten Realms offers a chance for employment for five demihumans whom have never met. Thinking only to earn money, and serve their own purposes, they hire out, together, under a necromancer. All too quickly they find themselves the last line of defense against a dark storm rising.  Written in 1998, this novelette-length story was only my second campaign in Dungeons and Dragons.

On the border realms of the universe lies a world caught in the throws of disaster and death. Her many races -- elves, humans, dwarves and others -- battle for survival in a vast war between dragon gods, elemental lords, and demons from the Abyss. This is a tale of three of Abode's warriors, as they try to survive a mystery buried long ago.  I crafted this as a background story to the first kit I ever created, and somehow convinced three guys to try it out.

An unremarkable assassin finds himself with the contract of a lifetime -- and all the danger that comes with it. Seeking aid in unlikely places, he finds that Destiny can be far more cold and cruel than he, as the gift of magius speaks to his soul.  Written in 1997, this was my first taste of Dungeons and Dragons.  The writing is atrocious, but I had to start somewhere.

Viradovax Karthamos is general and high priest to Five Spears Hold; he and his defend the southern portion of Erlkazar from armies, evil mages, and dark designs. But Vax is unable to defend the sanctity of his mind from a nightmare that seeks to engulf him, until he learns a subtle lesson in life.  Vax was originally intended as a character for the old 'Paladin in Hell' module for Dungeons and Dragons -- but when the module didn't pan out, the DM decided to use Vax as an NPC.  This, then, is the NPC's story.

Leftenant to Vax, Aradina is a powerful cleric of the Red Knight. A great terror mars her studies -- a fear of heights. And she is thrust into the heart of darkness when she must journey into the High Peaks, there to find the ogre Skysplitter, and offer peace to him, and herself.

Poetry
Sometimes words cry to be strung together, in the tumultous storm that is our soul. When the storm has passed, and the words are strung, we find ourselves wondering at what it is we have wrought. And sometimes, you just can't bear to throw it away.

Science Fiction
Some ideas lend themselves to stories; while others die, buried in the shadows of the mind. And then there are stories that are both -- the Ashirans were genetically engineered soldiers, sent back in time. This is how it all began.

The Empire of Valera consists of four worlds, three stars, two-dozen moons -- and 200 billion souls. The Empress was to have been wed in the largest single event in history, and security could not be tighter. Something went wrong. An assassin killed the priest, and the groom, in the middle of the ceremony. The only thing that saved the Empress was one of her body-guards, leaping into the line of fire -- and escaping unharmed. Something strange is going on as the investigation continues into the assassination...  Bah.  Sometimes I have to have a dose of SciFi -- no matter how badly written it is.
